Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has given a frank post-match interview to Sky Sports following defeat to Everton:
“I’m disappointed with the performance.
In the first half, we had the best chances and there were a couple of important saves by Pickford.
“In the second half, we were not able to create after they scored the goal. They dominated the game and they were dangerous on the counter-attack too.
‘To be honest, the struggle started in the way we press – or the way we didn’t press. Our pressure was very poor, lazy pressure. And when you have lazy pressure, you don’t press and you allow opponents to build from the back and they have players of amazing quality.
“Lazy pressure up front creates unbalanced situations for the rest of the team. I also feel some of my players were unfit. As an example, Matt (Doherty) was struggling to play in the way he plays. It’s been a very strange pre-season, and for some it was not even a pre-season.
“It is not an excuse for the defeat and the performance, but with so many referees on the pitch and the on line, to allow a free-kick to be taken five metres distance from the foul is very strange.
“But congratulations to my dear friend Carlo.”
